WOMEN'S CIRCLES
"GIRLS ROCK!"
At Rock 'n' Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it's OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that "it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are." They are taught by indie rock chicks such as Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney various lessons of empowerment from self-defense to anger management. At the end of just one week,
all the bands perform songs they've written with their new bandmates for over 700 people. "Girls Rock!" follows several campers: Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth addiction and gang activity; Palace, whose heavy metal sneer belies her seven years, and Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog Pipi. What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly revolutionary.
"Girls Rock!" is truly a labor of love. Shane King and Arne Johnson are Portland kids who grew up and relocated to the Bay Area, where they found a home and support amongst the great documentary filmmaking community there. They've mortgaged houses and cashed out retirements to finish their first film, about a group of very courageous girls, while other folks have donated time and finances.
Opening weekend will be crucial in the process of getting the word out about the camp's important work with girls. Every person who comes on March 7-9 will multiply exponentially
the number of daughters, moms, dads, brothers and friends who get to see it. Movie theaters in smaller towns, where girls don't have as much access to alternatives, will only program "Girls Rock!' if they see it bringing in audiences on opening weekend.
So please go yourself, bring friends, and help get out the
word! Here are some tangible steps you can take:
*Take a group. Bring your class or workplace or other group.
If you get a group of over 25 people, you'll get discounted tickets for everyone, and movie and camp schwag. Contact

Shout out
for a woman-of-color artistic director to work with the Herstories Project : A multicultural women's performance collective, investigating our ancestral legacies and current global issues as a means to heal, create community, inspire solidarity and share guidance and wisdom from the ancestors. We are six women who are crafting a ritual theater production for performances at the end of June. Themes we are exploring include:
- crisis into transformation,
- owning the shadow,
- taboos,
- silence,
- militarism,
- breaking out of personal and collective denial,
- healing ancestral wounds,
- ancestors as allies,
- claiming our role as ancestors to the future.
We are looking for someone who is committed to the politics
and spiritual vision of the Herstories Project and is available to work with us starting in May through the end of June.
The initial creative process is already in the works and will be guided by the shared leadership of the womyn in the collective. We would like the director to witness some of this journey and then step into to help craft, polish, connect the threads and tighten the flow of individual and group pieces.
Rehearsals are Mondays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm with potential added time as we come up on the performance.
A stipend will be provided.
Please call: 510-207-6623 or email: aryeh if you are interested!
We are also looking for a musician to work with us: please spread the word! THE HERSTORY OF THE HERSTORIES PROJECT
The Herstories Project was founded in 2003 with an initial grant from the City of Oakland to Aryeh Shell and Vika Teicher, to construct a community project exploring the use of feminist oral history and community-based theater as a means for transformative learning, healing and social liberation.
Over the course of six months, thirteen women from different cultural and class backgrounds, generations, and sexual orientations participated in dialogue and research on issues of social oppression and legacies of struggle and resistance. The women were trained in oral history and collaborative inquiry research techniques to collect and share from their own personal and ancestral histories. They used techniques from Theatre of the Oppressed, creative writing, collaborative ritual, and Dramatherapy to explore, contain and integrate the meanings and themes within their narratives. These stories were collectively woven into a two-hour ritual theater performance
that incorporated dance, drama, spoken word, music, slides,
and storytelling and was performed in four venues throughout
the Bay. FOLLOW-Up: .
An adaptation of the original production to a 30-minute piece
was performed by five women for a 5-week run at theaters in
San Francisco and Walnut Creek , CA . . A series of one-day community workshops called "Honoring the Bones" in which women explored how the achievements and struggles of their women ancestors affect their life and identity. . An 8-week workshop developed by five women from the original project
that culminated in public performance. . An ongoing support circle composed of original members of the project to continue exploring the material and relationships generated by the group process. . Current women's performance collective and visioning future plans Check the website for more info: http://herstoriesproject.org

A JOURNEY INTO THE SOUL
WOMEN BREATHWORK
CREATIVE EXPRESSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK TM is a powerful method of using
non-ordinary states for self-exploration, personal transformation
and healing. It is based on insights from modern consciousness
research, depth psychology, and various spiritual practices. It was
developed by Stanislav Grof , MD and Christina Grof , leading
pioneers in the field of transpersonal psychology. Holotropic,
derived from the Greek holos and trapein , means "moving
towards wholeness".
A highly experiential method, HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK TM
combines breathing, evocative music, focused release bodywork,
mandala drawing and group sharing at the end of the day. By
activating the unconscious and mobilizing blocked energies, this
work gives us access to all levels of human experience and
activates the spontaneous healing potential of the psyche.
The use of the EXPRESSIVE ARTS is a multi-arts approach in
which different art modalities are inter-woven as appropriate to
the client or group situation. The arts are gateways to our inner
worlds, to the soul, revealing the deepest aspects of the self and
supporting openings and transformative insight.
During the morning of the second day we will use different art
forms as well as sitting in circle to integrate the process from the
previous day. The creative arts are a wonderful way to deepen,
integrate and embody the experiences and insights from non
ordinary states. Our intention in the workshop is to create a
supportive environment in which each woman can surrender
fully to the sensations, feelings or experiences that may arise
during the weekend and feel fully supported by a community
of other women .
CONTRAINDICATIONS for this workshop include preganancy,
cardiovascular problems, severe hypertension, glaucoma, epilepsy,
acute infectious illness, recent surgery or fractures, or history of
severe emotional disorder or psychiatric hospitalization. If you have
any doubts regarding any of these conditions please call before
attending.
