GREENSPIRIT ARTS
The work of Sally J Smith

As with any artist, the act of creation itself is a deeply personal, often mysterious process. I love it most when I am so immersed in the moment that I loose track of human-time and entrain with Natural-time.

I love letting the feminine principal show the way forward to reveal the overall vision of my sculptures then inviting the masculine principal in me to do what "he" does best: problem-solve and meet the technical demands of any given piece. But it is SHE-in-me who is most in-charge of my creative process for it is my deep experience that it is the Feminine principal that is the ultimate creative force in this Universe, so I do my best to follow Her lead.

I make sculptures out in nature using materials that I find in the environment. The sculptures become a celebration of place and all the energies and spirits that inhabit the moment. I work year-round in my "backyard" - the wild Adirondack mountains , fields and forests of northern NY. Once a sculpture is completed I must photograph the piece, for in many cases it is quite ephemeral being made of flowers, feathers or such. It is all brought together for a moment in time and then, once the photographs are taken, I usually walk away leaving the piece where it was made, to return back to the Earth from where it first arose and for the Nature spirits to enjoy for as long as it lasts. I create two genre of sculptures - Faerie houses:

and works I call "Eartherials" which basically are all the rest, many of which are based on but not limited to the spiral shape as the core design element.

I especially love working with ice.

The sculptures can be small and intimate:

Or quite large:

But most are moderately sized somewhere in-between.

For 4+ years now I have been doing this work and I have hundreds of sculptures in my archives. Getting this work out to the public has been a challenge. I have so far created my own line of products: calendars, fine art prints on paper and canvas, books, and greeting cards (printed on 100% recycled stock using soy inks by a company that is 100% wind-powered which will be available on-line shortly). I have also partnered with Pomegranate Communications and they produce lovely, large calendars featuring my Faerie House sculptures. We are currently working on the selections for the 2012 calendar! But what has me most excited is my new DVD project called   "ONE"

There is a very magical back-story of how this project actually came to be which I share in the bonus features section of the DVD. It literally started from a dream...but I don't want to spoil the story! The production is arranged in 8 chapters and follows the flow of all the seasons for one year. The soothing, lyrical music perfectly compliments the images and the whole experience is inspiring and enchanting. It is especially enjoyed by children. Because I have made many varied and unique sculptures over the years, this DVD has become the best vehicle for people to see my work because so much can be sensitively shared. It is quite unlike anything else out there. You can hear and see a clip from the DVD on my webpage:   www.greenspiritarts.com   .

Once you see the DVD you will never look at the natural world the same way again. I hear from many that after they see my DVD they want to go out and try their hand at making their own creations. When I hear that I feel I have succeeded beyond my wildest hopes, for the Earth is aching to work with each of us all now as we move forward into a new paradigm. We each have a small, brilliant jewel to contribute towards that Grand Awakening, and my sculpture work is my contribution.

Musings

Art is not so much expressing oneself, as it is discovering oneself.
- Anawanitia

The only thing better than singing is more singing.
- Ella Fitzgerald

Stop. Breathe. Allow yourself the luxury of doing nothing for a moment, or an hour, or even a day. It is in emptiness that inspiration will appear.
- Carole Katchen

I don't see why we ever think of what others think of what we do – no matter who they are. Isn't it enough just to express yourself?
- Georgia O'Keeffe

Fried Sugar Throat

Peel me like a pear
I don't care
wear me anyway you want
as long as I'm soft
drawn open
a fried sugar throat
a resting bone
breath like strawberry
and a sore sore throat
so sore I rub it
I love it

Do whatever you want
I don't care
as long as I'm soft
tasting tangerine
caught like a thief
whispering vines
in between teeth

My hands wander
my eyes wander
my heart wanders
I'm fine as long as you
let me go on about with
this sweetness
a fried sugar throat
going sweeter
with every turn

Peel me like a pear
I don't care
spin me round
see what you create
little jewel box handler
wear me anyway you want
I don't care
as long as I'm soft
sore and sweet.
